My son is working out and paying attention to his diet. One day he showed me a salad he was eating for lunch. He said it was all protein: chicken, bacon, cheese, spinach…spinach?

He said, “Sure, you know like Popeye, the sailor man!”

When you want to build your strength, you eat meat!

Hebrews 5:14, “But solid food is for full grown men, for those whose senses and mental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish between what is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary either to divine or human law.”

“The solid meat, or food, is not absolutely necessary for preserving life, but is so for acquiring greater strength…Even strong men partake of milk, but do not make milk their chief, much less their sole, diet.” Critical and Explanatory Commentary, Vol. II

Today I learned something I thought was disgusting was not what I thought at all.

2 Kings 6:23, “And a great famine came to Samaria. They besieged it until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty shekels of silver and a fourth of a kab of dove’s dung [a wild vegetable] for five shekels of silver.”

“Dove’s dung is thought by Bochart to be a kind of pulse or pea, common in Judea, and still kept in the store-houses of Cairo and Damascus, and other places, for the use of it by pilgrim caravans; by Linneus, and other botanist, it is said to be the root or white bulb of the plant Ornithogalum umbellatum, Star of Bethlehem.” Critical and Explanatory Commentary, Vol. I

I may try to eat “Dove’s Dung”, but I still plan to avoid “Rocky Mountain Oysters.”

How much water do I drink? I asked myself that questions when I read today’s verse.

2 Kings 3:9, “…They made a circuit of seven days’ journey, but there was no water for the army or for the animals following them.”

God worked a great miracle using water in this chapter. I have experienced what happens when you are sick and become dehydrated. It isn’t pretty, but expensive!

I thought of the verse we read yesterday of the bad water that caused miscarriage and bareness (2 Kings 2:19-22). Was that the effects of dehydration?

Water is important in fertility for both men and women. After all, a man’s sperm is often referred to as “swimmers.” They need plenty of liquid to swim in!

And women need to be fully hydrated before they conceive, since the water in her womb will be changed seven times a day.

It seems each generation drinks less water and doesn’t even realize how dehydrated they are. Water is replaced with food and caffeine.

Remember God works miracles with just water.

In the sermon last night, I learned almost a third of the world is enduring famine now and over 2 billion people will go to bed hungry tonight.

That is made even sadder by the fact many of us are searching for the perfect diet to help us lose weight. We need to be faithful servants, like those spoken of in today’s verse.

Matthew 24:45, “Who then is the faithful, thoughtful, and wise servant, whom his master has put in charge of his household to give to the others the food and supplies at the proper time.”

God does not bless us to hoard it all for ourselves. We are to share and help the needy, whether by sending money to organizations that feed the hungry or by getting items out of our own cupboards to give to the local food bank.

The idea of eating honey out of a dead lion is totally disgusting.

Judges 14:8, “After a while he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the body of the lion, and behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the body of the lion.”

“Probably after the lapse of a year – the usual interval between the ceremonies of betrothal and marriage…In such a climate, the myriads of insects, and the ravages of birds of prey, together with the influences of the solar rays, would, in a few months, put the carcass in a state inviting to such clean animals as bees.” Critical and Explanatory Commentary, Vol. I

I guess honey out of bleached bones would be different.

One of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving is the leftovers! I love those turkey sandwiches made with homemade rolls. When the people brought a free will offering it was a day of feasting…with leftovers!

Leviticus 7:16, “But if the sacrifice of the worshiper’s offering is a vow or a free will offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice, and on the morrow that which remains of it shall be eaten.”

A lamb was brought as a sacrifice and the right thigh was left with the priest, (v. 32), as his portion. The rest was taken home and eaten by the family…with leftovers! When we give to God first, there are always leftovers.

Only God could design a Bible Reading Guide that had you read the first chapter of Numbers on Veteran’s Day. The men were numbered who were qualified to be soldiers.

Numbers 1:3, “From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go forth to war you and Aaron shall number, company by company.”

Amplified Bible Notes: “This book accounts for the thirty-eight years of wilderness wanderings…Divine provision for Israel is apparent throughout the book of Numbers. The food supply in manna, water, and quails for a population of over 600,000 men, plus women and children, throughout nearly four decades of wilderness travel extends beyond the natural resources available to Moses.”

“What an astonishing increase from seventy-five persons who went down to Egypt about 215 years before, and who were subjected to the greatest privations and hardships! And yet this enumeration was restricted to men from 20 years old and upwards. Including women, children, and old men, together with the Levites, the whole population of Israel, on the ordinary principles of computation, amounted to about 2,4000,000.” Critical and Explanatory Commentary, Vol.  I

God took 70 people and multiplied them to 2,400,000 in spite of the privations, hardships of slavery and the killing of newborn boys.

Then he led them, fed them, kept their clothes from wearing out, and protected them, for 40 years in a desert!

He will take care of you.
